On August 3rd, 1995, airplane IL-76
with a crew of 7 people was taken hostage by Taliban
and grounded in Kandahar airport.
On August 16th, 1996, after 378 days in captivity, IL-76 crew were able to escape by flying away on their plane. From Kandahar airport they flew to United Arab Emirates. 2 days later they were home.
Captain Vladimir Sharpatov and second pilot Gazinuru Hairullinu were honored with the title "Hero of Russia."
Plane engineers Ashat Abbyazov, Sergey Butuzov, Victor Ryazanov, and also flight-manager Munir Faizulin were decorated with the "Order of Courage."
