speech,
a concert took place.
Later that evening, Himmler had
his own little party as well.
2 months have passed since the first
conversation about physicist Runge.
At the party Shtirlitz mentioned to
Shelenberg that it’s, probably, unwise
that people of Muller work with some
arrested nuclear physicist named Runge.
I, at least, graduated from a college
with math and physics as my majors.
I was, honestly, on the brink of physical
exhaustion studying physics in college.
Mr. Runge has personal connections and
contacts over the ocean in the States.
It would be more advantageous if we,
the intelligence, would work with him.
But, in college, you specialized in
quantum mechanics, not physics.
- Who told you that? Muller?
- No. I have my own informants.
Shtirlitz tossed up this idea
to Shellenberg and then
he began telling funny jokes to friends.
He intentionally didn’t talk about
Runge's matter any more at the party.
He knew for sure that Shellenberg,
being a very clever manager
and a naturally innate, talented
intelligence officer, would not
allow himself to forget general
topics of any conversation.
And he would never miss the main
moments of any conversation at all.
Shtirlitz was well aware that
Shellenberg is a serious enemy.
In questions of strategy to trick
Shellenberg was very difficult.
To say it correctly - it was impossible.
Working with Shelenberg for years,
Shtirliz noted a curious detail about him.
Shellenberg at first would not pay any
attention to any proposals or ideas.
That was actually a "make belief",
his secretive professional strategy.
But after a little or a long while
he would present the idea to others
as if it was his own idea and he
would make people accept it as such.
Naturally, he would present it to his
management first to get approved
and only then he would present
the idea to his subordinates.
Yes, he was actually presenting
other people's ideas as his own.
But he was doing it so very cleverly
and artfully, connecting them to the
full complex of political and military
issues and interests of the Reich, so
no one would ever suspect him
in the primitive dirty plagiarism.
Shtirlitz calculated everything
with Shelenberg accurately.
A couple weeks passed since that
conversation at the banquet about Runge.
Shellenberg had a staff meeting
about failures of his secret agents
in Sweden and Liberia, and about
the treason of two agents, who
were considered completely reliable.
Shellenberg suffered all his
failures painfully and he would
carry out infinite staff meetings
after each of such failures.
Today he assembled the analysts of
the North European division and
he scolded each and one of them
with constructive criticism.
Shtirlitz knew Shellenberg well
but still he could not predict
that Shelenberg would bring up Runge's
matter and will talk about it soon.
And not just “soon”, but today,
right after this staff meeting.
Shtirlitz, please stay here for
a few minutes, will you?
Shtirlitz, I have an interesting idea.
Please, bring some fresh coffee.
Shtirlitz, I want to talk to you.
Technical progress determines
the future of human history.
Especially now, when scientists almost
opened the secrets of atomic nucleus.
I believe that in the West and in the
East the scientists realize that well,
but their politicians still can not
get a good grasp on the nuclear idea.
We will be witnessing soon a complete
degradation of the profession of
a politician in its special meaning,
as we used to know it for centuries.
It is very hard to understand
the original motives of people,
who are in the front lines of science.
Impossible to guess for sure how
those people would react in the future
to political events that could
shape the political future of their
countries as well as of the entire world.
By the way, what was the name of that
German physicist you worked with?
Shtirlitz realized right away that
this was his check
