kind of
bouncing around behind it.
So here's the $64,000 question.
And to adjust for inflation,
it's a $6.1 trillion.
Yeah.
-Is this gonna kill Nero and his crew?
-Yes.
-Yes.
-I think it rips the ship apart.
That's the way that I've always felt.
Given the point of origin,
the ship is getting...
-People keep asking.
-By the way, that shot right there,
if you look at that, what the Steadicam
operator, Colin Anderson,
did right there, he swooped around,
made it look like it was a computer.
-He was so crazy stable.
-Yeah. Amazing.
This whole shot was just done
with a Steadicam.
It's an amazing work.
No, I think his ship gets destroyed.
I think it's crystal clear that the ship
is getting broken into tiny little pieces
and he's dead, but people keep saying,
-"Did Nero survive?"
-In our study of black holes... Sorry, go.
No, go ahead.
This was one of J.J.'s big final changes
at the end on the mix.
There were a lot of sound effects here,
and you made the decision
to take out everything
and just have the music play here.
When you're doing the mix,
they do these passes that are
only music, only sound, only of dialogue.
And all of a sudden they did a pass
where they only have music,
and I was like, "Oh, my God,
it's so much better with just music."
'Cause you just feel it.
And it doesn't feel like
you're being bombarded with stuff.
And it was just, you know, an accident.
Especially because of all the choral stuff
that's starting to happen here.
By the way, when we were there
listening to the choir,
I said to Michael,
I'm like, "What are they singing?"
And they were literally, like,
singing his pets' names growing up.
It was like, you know, "Cinnamon."
Or whatever. That was ridiculous.
-Cinnamon?
-I don't know.
-I can't remember...
-Wow.
...what his dog's name was.
But this moment and that music
reminds me of a Spielberg moment
like crazy.
That music for some reason reminds
me of a John Williams-y sort of thing.
I don't know what Giacchino was
channelling right there,
-but I just love that.
-Same with Scotty's introduction
and walking down the hallway into the...
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's got that sort of, yeah...
-That E.T. thing.
-The E.T. thing, yeah.
Bob, so, theory?
Just the black hole is like a whirlpool.
So, you don't drown
if you have a good ship
that can navigate you through
the singularity at the centre.
But if your ship's breaking up,
you're essentially sinking
into the whirlpool and dying.
That's why he's not
travelling back in time.
Cool.
-For anybody who cares.
-I do.
And this just in,
NCC-1701, Matt Jefferies,
the original production designer,
made it up.
They're aircraft registration codes
of the 20th century.
"N" equals registered in U.S.,
"C" equals civil aircraft,
second С equals space.
And the 1701 is for seventeenth design,
first ship.
-Wow.
-Wow.
Thank you.
If you've been watching the whole
commentary for that, thanks for waiting.
Well, the number of the ship on
the Kelvin is my grandfather's birthday.
And then, once again, the silence.
The sound.
My favourite thing here
was the glass breaking.
That was Mary Jo Markey's idea.
Which happened earlier, you know,
a few seconds ago.
But when the glass starts to shatter,
that to me was an editorial decision,
and one of my favourite ideas
I ever heard in my life.
She had that, I'm like,
"Oh, my God. That's genius."
By the way, I love the decision that
this is not a "yay" moment,
where they all throw their arms up
and say, "Yay."
That you played it as relief.
Like, "Oh, my God.
I can't believe we just got out of this."
But this is the money moment
right there, which is the nod.
-Huge. Huge.
-Yeah.
To underplay that moment
is what makes it so powerful.
Now, J.J., I know that
you don't understand sports,
but there's a thing that happens
in baseball when you get somebody out
-where you throw the ball around.
-When you
