So in this moment
when the parachute breaks,
for those people, they're like,
"These two are dead.
-"There's no way to save them."
-Now, in these shots
where you see close-ups of them,
like when they're falling together,
like this, they're just hugging
and turning on the mirror
and the camera is shaking. That was
the day that Walter Koenig visited,
who played the original...
And I think he thought this was gonna be
the worst movie of all time.
I was so embarrassed. I was like,
"Mr Koenig, I swear, it's not gonna just
look like two guys hugging on a mirror."
I'd watch that, though.
This was one hallway, and we cut there
to make it look like a bigger hallway.
For some reason, it's one
of my favourite cuts in the movie.
By the way, I think we've all gone
on record as saying
one of our favourite Trek films
is Galaxy Quest.
And this sequence
is clearly an homage to
-Tony Shalhoub's great save in that film.
-It's a brilliant, brilliant movie.
God, that movie is good.
And I love the way
-the beaming effects look there.
-The beaming.
That it breaks.
That it kind of shatters there.
When he says, "Yo-moyo," we were
in Moscow and he said that line,
the audience went
insane at the premiere.
What does it mean?
I can't really say it with
my daughter listening.
-Okay.
-But it's a sort of colloquialism.
-Okay.
-But it's a sort of colloquialism.
-Involving borscht.
-"I'm so happy?"
Roughly translated it means,
"Good borscht!"
Exclamation point.
I love that Spock assumes
the transporting position.
This was the first shot, by the way,
that we did with Zachary
-in the movie, this very one.
-I remember these were
the first dailies I saw. Obviously sans
anything crumbling behind him.
-So that's a shuttle leaving the planet?
-Yeah.
-These are all real rocks.
-No, that's not true.
There's the katric ark.
And this was, again,
another piece of music that we added,
-you know, put back in in the last mix.
-Makes a huge, huge, huge difference.
This was one of my favourite shots
that ILM, I think,
just did an amazing job, which
was referencing existing Trek lore.
By the way, in watching the movie,
you know, one of the things
that occurred to me,
'cause I remember seeing these dailies,
was basically like, "Wow, I don't think
I've ever seen Spock run before."
-I'm sure he ran in the original series.
-No.
Yeah, you saw him run a little bit,
-but not like this.
-But very, very infrequently.
-Yeah, this is a whole other...
-When that guy eats it there,
it's very pleasurable for some reason
for me. I don't know why.
-That is even more pleasurable.
-And that was all practical.
Literally. That was a stuntman who was
just standing behind the rock,
but it sure looks like it took him out.
Vulcan elder known as Splat.
-Terrible.
-Thank you.
And this is great.
I love this moment that Winona gives us,
-which is basically, "Wait a minute."
-"I know I'm about to eat it."
-"This is not gonna work."
-"Yeah, see you later."
I just love Anton's performance there,
just how he feels his failure.
This is a great series of shots,
but one of the performances that I really
love here, again, is Ben Cross',
-which is basically, like...
-I agree.
"Okay, I want you to play the fact
that your wife is dead.
-"But you're a Vulcan."
-But you're Vulcan. Go.
"And action."
-And let's begin. So there it is.
-Well, same for Zach, for your mother.
It's basically like, "Wow, I really want
to be very upset, but I'm a Vulcan."
And I just love how in the script,
you guys went from a high
of everyone being saved moments ago
to the planet and his mother dying,
-which is just tragic.
-This is a great effect, by the way.
I mean, you basically say to someone,
"Planet sucked into internal black hole."
-Yes, it's easier to write than
